A leaderboard is 728 pixels wide and 90 pixels high and usually sits above the content, right below the navigation. It is the second standard size next to the medium rectangle and can be booked in almost every display network; on mobile it is replaced by the 320×50 mobile leaderboard.

The name goes back to the early days of banner advertising, when the size hung above the content like a scoreboard. The leaderboard is part of the IAB Universal Ad Package of 2003 and has been, next to the medium rectangle, the most widely available standard ever since. Media plans list it as leaderboard, as super banner in the German market, or simply as 728×90.

Placement, how much copy fits and the usual file size are on the format page 728×90 in detail.
